North West Metal Sections

Cold-Rolled C Section

Cold-rolled C sections are one of the most widely used profiles in structural steel construction projects. Their shape provides excellent strength and stability, making them ideal for a variety of construction and manufacturing uses. Produced using precision roll-forming techniques, these sections offer a lightweight yet durable solution where consistent quality and ease of installation are essential.

At NW Metal Sections, we manufacture cold-rolled C sections to suit a wide range of project requirements. Whether you need standard sizes or bespoke profiles of specific length or depth, our team can provide a reliable solution.

What are the Benefits of Cold-Rolled Steel C Sections?

Strong and Lightweight

The C-shaped profile delivers high structural performance while keeping weight to a minimum. This makes it easier to transport, handle and install, helping to reduce time and labour costs on site.

Versatile Application

Cold-rolled C sections are used across many industries, including construction, modular building, manufacturing, and agriculture. Typical applications include wall and floor joists, purlins, rails, and framing components.

Accurate and Consistent

Manufactured at room temperature, cold-rolled C sections benefit from strain hardening, which improves their strength and surface finish. This process also ensures precise dimensions and consistent quality across each batch.

Applications of C Sections

NW Metal Sections supplies cold-rolled C sections for a range of structural and secondary uses, including:

  • Purlins and side rails in steel-framed and portal-frame buildings, supporting roof sheeting and wall cladding across long spans.
  • Floor joists and roof supports in light steel framing, offering dimensional stability and non-combustibility, unlike timber.
  • Mezzanine flooring in warehouses and distribution centres, where pre-cut and pre-drilled sections speed up installation.
  • Wall studs in modular housing, hotels, and steel framing system builds, integrating with insulation and plasterboard for fast assembly.
  • Racking and shelving systems for pallet, longspan, and bespoke storage systems.
  • Agricultural buildings, including livestock sheds and grain stores, where galvanised C sections resist corrosion in harsh environments.

Each section is produced using high-quality certified steel and is available in a variety of sizes, gauges and finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between hot-rolled and cold-rolled C sections?

Hot-rolled C sections are formed at high temperatures (above 900°C), which gives them a rougher surface finish and looser dimensional tolerance. They're commonly used for primary structural members where heavy loads and large spans are involved.

Cold-rolled C sections are formed at room temperature from a steel coil. This produces a smoother finish, with tighter tolerances and improved strength through strain hardening. They're lighter, more precise, and better suited to secondary steelwork, such as purlins, side rails, floor joists, and wall studs.

What sizes of cold-rolled C sections are available?

Cold-rolled C sections are typically available in depths from 100mm to 300mm, with material thicknesses ranging from 1.2mm to 3mm. Common gauges include 1.5mm, 2mm, and 2.5mm. Bespoke depths, flange widths, and lip configurations can also be produced to order based on project requirements.

Are cold-rolled C sections galvanised?

Yes, cold-rolled C sections are mostly supplied pre-galvanised. This means the zinc coating is applied to the steel coil before the section is roll-formed. This provides reliable corrosion protection for use in construction, agricultural, and industrial environments.

Standard coatings include Z275 (275 g/m² total) for general internal and protected external use, and Z350 (350 g/m²) for more exposed conditions. Heavier coatings, such as Z450, are available on request for highly corrosive environments.
